Is there a German or French (or Arabic or Swahili) word for the desire to want things less efficient?

It's objectively better to have this magical glowing rectangle that can do everything, than multiple single-purpose devices in our bags. But, I kind of want multiple single-purpose devices in our bags.

I want a device for my contacts, a music player, and a little mobile word processor with a clicky QWERTY keyboard. Each device designed for its single purpose. I mean, I don't but i do.

The image I used in the previous post was taken from the web to illustrate how the card system works: you insert a card in the slot on the left part of the device, and those icons you see on the card are actually touch buttons you press for the desired function.

This photo is of my unit. I replaced the batteries today. I’m pleasantly surprised at the quality of the LCD display, which hasn’t degraded in the least in all the device’s lifetime.

(Yes, the ABCDEF layout of the keyboard is abysmal.)

The Sharp IQ7300-M databank with 64KB of internal memory was released in 1990. I purchased it in 1991 after saving for months. I loved the idea of it having a series of external cards that extended its functionalities. I remember there were games like chess, there were dictionaries and other utilities. This thing is a bit like an Apple Newton, in the sense that it has kept going for 35 years, just by periodically replacing batteries. It still holds memos and phone numbers I saved 30 years ago.

okay i am very bored of reading about ARM versioning, but I think i've found out a few interesting things:

  • you cannot have SVE2 before ARMv9. this is to force you to pay more for ARMv9 instead of using ARMv8.
  • everything else is a clusterfuck
  • i should probably just target v8 and v9 plainly because i'm not sure the added shit is going to matter.

imagine for example, that you wish to build versions with optional SVE, because vectors good. as far as i can tell, to do that, i have to know which version you are targeting because i cannot sniff it fully. why do i have to know? because on aarch64, you specify optional features with -march=target+feat1+feat2. how do i fill in target? or am i supposed to just build for the 18 different arm base targets and for each of those all the optional features?

i do not think so.

A fairly stout brown bird with a short strong (finch) bill for seeds. It has a nice eyebrow and an eye patch. The chest and underpants are mottled brown and light tan. The wings appear darker brown but with some mottling. This is a female Purple Finch. I rarely see, or more likely recognize the males. There are two subspecies, so this is likely the eastern. We went from "Trump doesn't start wars" to "send your kids to die for oil reserves" pretty fast.

This is the issue that Trump will lose support over for real. There's a large faction on the right who are sick of endless wars. You ask them to send their kids to die, and they'll sit out future elections.
