This is a solid post on how to frame a debate on the ethics of using various forms of "AI". The problem with applying it in tech, specifically, is that IMO a majority of tech workers simply have no values and would gladly program a school-destroying drone if paid to do so. Otherwise the Google protests, for example, would have completely shut the company down

@baldur I also noticed that the global consciousness of a software crisis, and more generally awareness about the state of software quality, dropped significantly since the pandemic. Previously, big software failures were making the headlines, from crypto library vulnerabilities to embedded car software faults to the failure of multi million € state-funded projects in Europe. I wonder if software became so vital and ingrained in our lives that we embraced all of its quirks, or if new practices around software craft, testing, agile, safer languages and platforms, devops, etc really raised the quality bar. Fun fact: I started looking for some data, turned to the Chaos Report as you would, to realize it stopped in 2020. Also chatGPT tells me “most current failure/success statistics are still based on 2020-era data” (for what it’s worth) 😆

This Afroman trial is giving me life.
Cops raided Afroman's house for no reason. They pointed guns at him and his kids, ransacked his house, and tried to disconnect his home security cameras. They didn't disconnect them all, and so were allegedly caught on camera stealing his money.
He then made a series of music videos using footage from his security camerasz and body cam footage. Now the cops are suing him for making the videos. The ACLU is defending him.
Today in ACAB: Afroman defeats Officer Lemon Pound Cake.
Afroman found not liable in bizarre Ohio defamation case: Afroman did not defame Ohio cops in a satirical music video that featured footage of them fruitlessly raiding the rapper's house, a jury...

@glyph Mostly it's this part that strikes me as being something I deeply object to, and for three reasons.
We don't know the actual energy usage impact of AI, partly in thanks to corporate secrecy.
Whatever progress we've made in renewable energy, that doesn't change that many genAI companies are using non-renewable sources for training and inferencing energy (to wit, Musk in Memphis).
And finally, genAI eating up capacity means that progress in renewables has a reduced impact on energy use.
