We're running a big fundraiser for @osnews, in honour of my 21 year tenure and 20000th post! Since my wife can barely work due to health issues (caused by her work, ugh), my family has to rely on my income much more heavily. And that means OSNews donations.

We've also got a bunch of fun incentives!

The success of choice screens casts the EU's larger failure to legalize quality browsers in sharp relief: by failing to remove the obvious legal and technical hurdles every browser maker says are keeping Blink and Gecko unavailable, the EC guarantees there can be no true iOS browser competition.

This matters because browser choice is, in fact, substantially the ballgame when it comes to opening up mobile computing:

The lengths Apple went to undermine the court's ruling were to say the least extraordinary:

🧵(4/7)

Rafael Onak, a user experience writing manager at Apple, instructed an employee to add the phrase “external website” to the screen because it “sounds scary, so execs will love it.” Another employee gave a suggestion on how to make the screen “even worse” by using the developer’s name, rather than the app name. “ooh - keep going,” another Apple employee responded in Slack. Even Cook got in on the action. When he finally saw the screen for approval, he asked that another warning be added to state that Apple’s privacy and security promises would no longer apply out on the web. In court, Apple tried to argue that the term “scary” didn’t actually mean it wanted the screen to scare people. “Scary,” it claimed, was a “term of art” — an industry term with a specialized meaning. In fact, the company claimed, “scary” meant “raising awareness and caution.” The court did not buy it, saying the argument strained “common sense.” Jacob Kastrenakes - The Verge

I'd like to remind anyone calling for a new Nürnberg Tribunal that the original one was only necessary because Germans didn't respond appropriately to the evil shit Nazis were doing, when they were doing it. The tribunals essentially asserted that the German people would have been justified in using any force necessary to stop the Nazis, and that all who didn't try to use such force were complicit.

Sit with that for a bit and ponder the implications.

I'm looking for my next role! I love working on the front of the front end, using component libraries and design systems. CSS makes me swoon, especially when paired with glorious, semantic, and accessible HTML.

Static site generators like 11ty are my jam, and I've worked with WordPress and Craft (with some Drupal long ago). My comments are often longer than my code because great documentation = awesome collaboration.

I've also been a web director, but now I'm focusing on senior+ dev or engineering manager positions. Send me a note and let's talk about it!
