Something that's sticking in my craw this time around is a parochial and oversimplified view of my home country, the US.

When I've been to re:publica before, I saw the US painted as the evil empire, the cautionary tale, the example to head off before it's too late. Fair, honestly!

But the US is more than just the Death Star. We can take lessons in resistance from the US. Germany needs to hear about the broad community groups that organize, inform, shop, teach, sing, track, and fundraise – and they do this using tech tools, even in a regime with way fewer privacy rights.

US-style tech authoritarianism is coming for us in Germany, so let's learn from US-style activism, too.

interestingly, because it needs to constant fold to achieve one of the unrollings and doesn't complain, i have good confidence that it must have done exactly what i wanted.

not that this is necessarily the final trick i will go with, but it's interesting that i can do this and be guaranteed that it does what i want. at least before it gets fed to the llvm backend...

Wire mother?

Your mother is here, danny... do you recognize her? “Is it soft mother ?” “Or wire mother?” “ma… ma…” “Yes, but which mama, danny?”

Friend: seriously, you should use your journalism background to get the inside scoop on the rich, it could be fantastic for your research!

Me: and just exactly how would I propose that. Write, “hi, my name is Robert Kingett. I'm a blind and gay Romance author. One of the Romance genres I pen is billionaire Romance, but I have a tiny request. I’d need to live in your mansion as well as eat any food your private chef creates for a year. For research, you know. I’d also need uninhibited access to your private jet because I will have hot and steamy sex scenes that take place inside of a private jet. Lastly, this research is most critical. I'll need to get an up-close look at how you exploit all your workers and loved ones just so I can make the Romantic tension and commentary on class as authentically as possible before the hot sex happens. May I speak to your people about this stunning opportunity? If you'd like your name to be the romantic lead, I must always accompany you, even to the bathroom. I must shag you on your plush bed at least 30 times, and I must witness all the ways you continue to always do ghastly things to the planet and to workers. Nothing can ever be secret because I need to write the most authentic billionaire Romance possible.

Friend: actually, that's perfect! Do that.

We sent an edited, but far more detailed, letter to billionaire’s houses via snail mail. If my name appears in a restraining order media scoop, you know why.

The success of choice screens casts the EU's larger failure to legalize quality browsers in sharp relief: by failing to remove the obvious legal and technical hurdles every browser maker says are keeping Blink and Gecko unavailable, the EC guarantees there can be no true iOS browser competition.

This matters because browser choice is, in fact, substantially the ballgame when it comes to opening up mobile computing:

The lengths Apple went to undermine the court's ruling were to say the least extraordinary:

🧵(4/7)

Rafael Onak, a user experience writing manager at Apple, instructed an employee to add the phrase “external website” to the screen because it “sounds scary, so execs will love it.” Another employee gave a suggestion on how to make the screen “even worse” by using the developer’s name, rather than the app name. “ooh - keep going,” another Apple employee responded in Slack. Even Cook got in on the action. When he finally saw the screen for approval, he asked that another warning be added to state that Apple’s privacy and security promises would no longer apply out on the web. In court, Apple tried to argue that the term “scary” didn’t actually mean it wanted the screen to scare people. “Scary,” it claimed, was a “term of art” — an industry term with a specialized meaning. In fact, the company claimed, “scary” meant “raising awareness and caution.” The court did not buy it, saying the argument strained “common sense.” Jacob Kastrenakes - The Verge
