We’re starting to rub against our server capacity for social.lol, so it’s time for an upgrade! We’ll be moving to a beefier server (double the RAM and significantly more disk space, with a nice NVMe RAID setup!) during our next regularly scheduled weekly maintenance window (Friday July 3 at 11 PM EDT / Saturday July 4 at 3 AM UTC).

Over the next few days I’ll work on optimizing the migration steps, executing dry runs, and benchmarking various parts of the process so that I can get a solid idea of expected downtime. Downtime will be unavoidable with this migration, but I’ll do everything I can to minimize it and accurately estimate it so we all know what to expect.

I’ll make a broader announcement within the next couple of days with more details. I’m super excited about this move, especially since the new server will keep social.lol running happily well into the future!

I made the screaming lizard coaster thing. Several friends have requested one. I'm keeping this one because it was my first try and I have learned many things on that journey. #crochet

Here's the link to the pattern - there were several out there but I liked the look of this one best.
https://www.etsy.com/listing/4478540220/tom-lizard-popping-coaster-crochet

A crocheted glass coaster in the shape of a screaming frog/lizard. A ceramic mug sits on the coaster, the writing on it says The Green Dragon. You can see into the open mouth of the critter, a red interior with a white tongue.
The side view of the same lizard with a better view of its bugged-out eyes.

basically, they knew they had nothing to offer really, so they bunged a lot of RAM on it and priced it under the next price class. literally it's a mediocre gpu with a lot more ram than the competition.

dysfun@treehouse.systems ("gaytabase") wrote:

the reason for the cost is probably the RAM - it has 32GB, which you aren't getting on any other card for anywhere near that price.

this might not be bad for running inference actually, since it can hold some of the more advanced models.

but if it's so shit at games, i'm not sure it's going to give you leading performance at inference either. but it's probably good enough and the memory size matters a lot.

HUB reckons it should be $350 on the basis of the gaming benchmarks.

the appalling results (consistently worse than a 9060 XT on 1080p, very narrowly better than it at 1440p despite costing $950 (!!!),) may explain why they're having a try at AI
