Like, every time I read somebody arguing we shouldn't judge people for using chatbots as it's the first time they've had somebody at their constant beck and call I think, no, that actually makes me think less of them

I can be slow sometimes, but I also always thought the constant signals of servility these systems are made to exude were obviously distasteful, even when experienced second-hand through other people's reports

we should just rename Kessler Syndrome to Musk Syndrome preemptively

Also anti-AI followers I shouldn’t have to say this but in these trying times I believe I must: if you harass the author of this piece, even just to say something snide like “well what did you expect, using the lie machine, you deserved to feel bad” then I repudiate you and you will never see the light of heaven. Please do not be part of the problem.

“I poisoned my own mind.”

More and more programmers are writing retrospectives like this — and a huge THANK YOU to Elissa for doing so — where they discover that Programming Is Not Special.

It is particularly interesting to read this from a solo game developer who is both a programmer and an artist, who began by thinking the programing isn’t art, and discovered by an emotionally torturous process that it actually is.

Today was my last day at work. Getting out of the tech industry for now, it's not a good place to be right now. I am extremely lucky to have gathered up enough money to not have to think about finding another job right away.

Will have a lot more time to spend with my partner and on my own projects now, though.

All done! We’re now on our new server, with tons of extra RAM and disk space ("so much room for activities"), running 4.6.3+glitch, and all sidekiq queues are now fully caught up.

Elasticsearch indexes are being rebuilt right now, and that’ll take a while (even at ~2500 docs/second, we're looking at ~21 hours to fully cover the 207,680,460 items in our index).

Overall, everything went well! Thanks once again for your patience while I worked through this move, and apologies — again — for the unrelated (but sort of tangentially related) disruptions earlier. The good news is that our migration addresses the memory issues that led to those hiccups earlier, so thing should be so much better from here on out. :prami_happy:

There will likely be a couple of service restarts (and possibly one final server restart) over the next 20 minutes or so. And then we’re finished! Stay tuned for a final update.

Our migration is pretty much finished, but there are still some remaining items to work through (a handful of things to check and a few configuration items to adjust as a result of those checks). Elasticsearch will be back online momentarily. And I still need to upgrade Mastodon itself to 4.6.3 which was released earlier. Shouldn’t be too much longer before we’re officially complete. Thanks for your patience!
