Slight caveat: this is an economics course, so I'm guessing many if not most of the students were economics majors, where you're pretty much indoctrinated to always take shortcuts and disdain fields where you don't (hence my animosity to what's effectively the post-truth propaganda arm of academia)

For me, there are four major reasons to oppose AI (with my note the other day about both disaggregating and aggregating in mind):

1. AI products are founded on eugenicist philosophy and primarily benefit fascists.
2. AI products are created by exploiting labor and are designed to continue undermining labor rights.
3. AI products carry unconscionable environmental costs.
4. AI products introduce unconscionable risk of new defects.

Only one of those is even indirectly about quality.

@Tak The most incredible and useful thing the AI industry did, was to ingest nearly the entire corpus of all human creation that exists, digitizing anything that wasn't already available online. Then, they packaged it in a basic, fulltext syntax that could (incidentally) be easily searched through.

Hell, they even created a program that could do fancy vector math to associate words and phrases with similar meanings together, so you can use a search term which does not show up in a document, but because you're describing a similar problem or phenomena, it can associate the two.

THEN, rather than just packaging this tool as a simple search engine that would turn up the original source document in the corpus which matches your query best, they INSTEAD decided they wanted to just make it kind of try to answer by doing the same word association stuff to try to generate an answer output back to you, halfway pulling from content that was memorized in its weights, and halfway done by literally bullshitting, and coming up with incorrect info.

We were so close to getting something spectacular that would've added synergistically to human creativity, but we felt the need to see AI as a god, or a digital person, instead of seeing it as a compilation of all human effort. And so it was built to generate answers on its own, instead of spitting back the higher quality answers that it was trained on.

But for the PHP bug, I think the issue here is egemi isn't handling the meta tied to the status 10 payload correctly. What's happening on the server end when /hello.php is requested is this exact response:

10 What's your name?\r\n

Position 6 in the string that's sent with with the 10 payload is in fact byte 32 (as reported in the egemi error), which is a space character (the space between "What's" and "your"). Normally spaces aren't OK in the meta here, since that's where a MIME type is usually expected, but status 10/11 responses are an exception. The spec defines those payloads as free-form text prompts meant to be displayed to a user, not a MIME type as you'd normally get with a 2X status.

So this could be a bug in the mime parser, or in the underlying egemi code (since technically the browser shouldn't be treating what comes after 1X codes as a MIME type, so it shouldn't really be trying to parse that, but rather displaying it as an input prompt per the spec). Let me know if I can offer any other info or set up any test pages to help with this further!

That’s an insane amount! That is a lot of people getting screwed over, and that’s only the people who reported it who got compensation! And there are people who work for the state who take extreme joy in taking administrative action and fining insurance companies – so far this year, California insurance companies have already been fined $19.7 million, and those are not ‘medical loss’ numbers that count towards the amount of profit they’re allowed to make.

So do those people at the state a solid. You don’t have to be a green Nintendo plumber to make insurers pay; you can make a difference from your desk. If your insurance company causes you trouble, spend the five minutes to file with the DMHC helpline.

This year, my insurance plan just decided not to cover a normal preventative lipid and A1C panel for my annual physical, leaving me with a $200 bill from Palo Alto Medical Foundation. The state decided my insurance should pay it after all, and it’ll go into the file to see if they have a pattern of doing this. Blue Shield, get fucked.
