the other problem with that patchwork of metaphors is that it really _isn't_ like all of those things, it's a different thing, with a subtle and complex dynamic that needs to be better understood
really would like to see a lot more of that cagey energy that people bring to legal recommendations being brought to discussions around open source infrastructure. "This is not formal technical advice; I am a maintainer, but I'm not YOUR maintainer"
Tidelift, Patreon, Github Sponsors, KoFi et. al. lay down a patchwork of "it's like a professional services contract / it's like a fan club / it's like a SaaS subscription / it's like busking" metaphors that don't quite hang together, partially because everyone individually defines what their specific expectations can be, one at a time, and there's just … not a lot of discussion of harmonizing these
Rich Hickey's famous "Open Source Is Not About You" https://gist.github.com/richhickey/1563cddea1002958f96e7ba9519972d9 is an interesting start that deconstructs some of the *current* dysfunctional status quo, but while "fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" is an excellent outro lyric, it's not a solid basis for the foundation of a community of mutual benefit
in the open source world we really need some well-recognized social concept like the "attorney-client relationship" that establishes some boundaries around expectations and obligations

But also what a commons _is_ is a bit weird with information.

Am I doing a bit or am I just totally punch-drunk from the combined relief from finally getting this multi-week task off my plate as well as the massive psychic exhaustion dealing with my own tiny personal slice of the polycrisis? ALL OF THE ABOVE, FOR SURE
"QUAD-WEEKLY" definitely sounds cooler than "oops I had completely dysfunctional time management for 3 weeks straight", like it's a quake powerup instead of a neurodevelopmental disorder
ANYWAY sign up for WEEKLY or in this case QUAD-WEEKLY updates about creating software by typing computer programs into a computer, or communicating ideas also by typing words into a computer, using the same set of programs, and also get commit-message shout-outs via https://github.com/glyph/sponcom as long as you ANSWER MY EMAIL when I ask you what name you'd like me to use
but also retrofuturistic blogging https://blog.glyph.im . Not that I blog about retrofuturism, but my blog is from the future of an alternate history where people just write and put those posts up on the internet for other people to read, instead of a content marketing pipeline for my seminar grift, or an advertising play (mostly because I never figured out how to set up adsense)
How would I describe what I do? I don't know! "Gonzo open source" is a part of it I guess, with my own collection of "indie" projects https://github.com/glyph/ as well as some stuff with Twisted and its ecosystem
if you're more interested in the open source sustainability side of things then feel free to have a look at https://github.com/sponsors/glyph/ instead, happy to gift you access to the Patreon updates if you drop me an email
ANYWAY after that boost of self-confidence from reviewing all this stuff let me remind everyone that I HAVE A PATREON and if you like my code, my writing, or my Unhinged Poasting on here you can support it via https://patreon.com/creatorglyph
Having a powerful #ADHD moment today as I began by thinking "ugh between the jet lag and all the side effects from the meds, I have done nearly nothing for 4 weeks, this is going to be a miserable excuse of a post" and then I did the research about what I've actually done, and eventually needed to stop going back through browser history after 3 hours of writing because updates are not supposed to take that long.
WE ARE SO BACK https://www.patreon.com/creatorglyph/posts/patreon-update-164760797
okay I have provoked altogether too much curiosity with this, I was subtooting the longevity-obsessed billionaire vampire who just claimed he'd already created a clone of himself, which he was openly salivating about harvesting for organs and such. in fairness he was _directly_ misunderstanding "Mad Max: Fury Road" in his post, but the disposable clones thing is what got me

Ma'am, that is a twenty five thousand LoC slab of C++ code. It targets a console designed twenty two years ago and discontinued twelve years ago. It is an amalgamation of the work of several developers, forked, patched, reformatted, strained, and ultimately inexorably joined in an unholy Make ruleset. Market economics had no hand in the creation of this abhorrence. The fact that this project exists proves that God is either impotent to alter His universe or ignorant to the horrors taking place in his kingdom. This prism of code is more than a story point. It is a physical declaration of mankind's contempt for entropy. It is hubris manifest.
We also have an SDL3 port if you would prefer that.
