it bothers me a bit when people talk about large dependency graphs like they're somebody else's problem. if your software has 1000 deps that's *your problem* don't palm it off on the ecosystem for having packages! i would be much more receptive to people complaining about the dependencies of software they're using, usually having a gigantic dependency tree just means you're importing a 'framework' or three. (and yeah i realise this is a pedantic distinction)

But then AI companies came and destroyed all of that. Apparently copyright law doesn't exist if you operate piracy at a large enough scale. I think there are two parts to why "we" accepted it. First was "Open" AI's weird corporate structure with the 501c3 that clouded the for profit motives. Second that the entire planet is being held hostage in a software cold war where the, legitimate, concerns are that rival countries will have more powerful AI that can exploit vulnerabilities

I figured I would self quote this because replies are weird on mastodon. This is a big part of why I have a hard line "Never AI" stance.

Water usage can be mitigated, energy can be renewable, manufacturing can catch up, but generative AI will always be built on theft because it needs so much data.

It sounds like a boring release, but it will allow us to do big things in Mock (namely, the -k option).

@mos_8502 @mhoye Regardless of size a language model is just an extraordinarily bad way to produce code. For that you want rigorous processes not vibes.

These models are mostly bad for generative use anyway, but small, specific, curated ones could be useful for helping the user find patterns. In a code context, patterns of common bugs and vulnerabilities, idioms used, seeking out existing implementations of an algorithm to read and learn from or to select as a library to use and credit, rather than to automate plagiarism of somebody else's implementation, etc.

There's a motivational thing people say that I find quite helpful: "one day or day one." Lord almighty, I understand it's incredibly cheesy. But after 4+ years of chronic illness, injuries, increasing chronic pain, scary misdiagnoses and mistreatments, and blows to how I've experienced being a physical body in the world, I guess I need a little cheese. I have so many brutal barriers to work around, I've been slipping more and more into giving up on working out.

Today is: Day One, again.

Panel 1. Cepper is happy of herself in front of her large canvas: a beautiful painting as she did on the previous episodes. The parrot looks at what she does on his perch. > Cepper: “Alright, this is how I usually do it.” > Parrot: "That style has high coherence for training data − I love it."
Panel 2. Cepper took her brush and now scribble on the canvas. (note: visual concept of the episode: the panel style itself is altered while Cepper tells it.) The Parrot feels uneasy. > Cepper: "I know, and that's exactly the problem. I should start by making the outline rougher."
Panel 3. Cepper is adding thick painting directly from the tube, and now rub furiously her canvas, many colors and glitches. The Parrot start to be horrified. > Cepper: "...more angular shapes, a rougher texture, and an overall less polished look."
Panel 4. The style is totally degraded: shapes, colors, glitches. Cepper leaves the canvas with triumph, throwing her brush, while the Parrot is now really horrified in front of it. > Cepper: "Perfect. Try to train on that now, you tin can."

a "geist" refers to a cognitive bias where person-like mental states are attributed to non-person entities. for example, asking whether a nation "wants" something is turning the nation into a geist. wondering if a chatroom has an "opinion" or a "belief" is another example. usually these questions can be reworded to be more concrete: "does the median person in this nation want X?" or "do the people in the chatroom have a consensus on Y?" but sometimes, once you reword your geisty thoughts into non-geisty terms, you'll realize it's not quite what you'd meant originally. and that's because you were thinking about the geist. and the geist is not real.

I'd very much appreciate feedback on the protocol draft, especially from people that have hands-on experience with webrtc and SFU stuff.

We just released Mastodon 4.7.0!

This version contains very few user-facing changes, but significantly reworks the backend code to improve security and support new protocol features.

You can read more about it on our blog: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2026/08/mastodon-4.7/

Note for admins: the database migrations might take a long time, this is expected (see the release notes).

Release notes and upgrade instructions are available here: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/tag/v4.7.0

This, coming from a writer who conflates generative models with the rest of ML and believes “AI” will deliver in the long term, otherwise broadly gets the point
