I think a lot of us white people could learn a lot from Dolly Parton: “If you see something’s wrong, just fix it.”

When you’re raised in whiteness, there’s a real temptation when presented with the fact that you made a mistake to get more incensed at the notion that someone might be accusing you of something than with the thing itself. “That thing you said was kinda racist.” “No it wasn’t! How dare you say I’m racist! I’m not racist! And even if you’re right, here’s 5 reasons why I didn’t mean it in a racist way and why what I said was actually fine.” All they needed to say was, “Sorry. I didn’t mean it that way.”

Dolly made a practice of learning and correcting herself over time. “Oh, you mean that thing offends the gay people? Well, then I wont say that anymore.” She didn’t need to fully understand why. She wasn’t gay and never pretended to understand the gay experience. She just needed to know that something was a problem and that was enough for her to make the change.

We should all be a little more Dolly.

And that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ask why. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to understand. It just means that change doesn’t have to be predicated on full understanding and that, when in doubt, trust the people who have the lived experience.

The moon during an almost total eclipse. The sky is black. The moon has a sliver of white at the top right, and is otherwise red with the earth's shadow. There's a star or planet close to the moon, and a couple of light artifacts from the camera lens and/or binoculars, making a light orange blur at the top left and a bluish blur just below it to the right.

Something I find amusing is how gaming can be credited for a lot of my professional skills.
I learned to code/design beyond simple html and css creating addons and mods.
I learned community management skills being a guild officer/leader and a moderator for a gaming forum ages ago.
I understood accessibility by experiencing how issues effected other players and helping to resolve those issues.

Folks always talk about “hand eye coordination” or “brain exercises” but they can help so much more.

We're excited to announce an investment of over 500K Euro by @sovtechfund into Flatpak!

The focus of the project is on closing gaps in Flatpak’s sandboxing story: new portals for audio, networking, VPNs, and spell checking, as well as infrastructure work on entitlements and intents. We have a great team of community members on board, who will be working on this through the end of 2027.

Sovereign investment in #opensource software can be the most efficient use of public funds imaginable.

Its not a panacea, its not without its own risks but it has been a blind spot for too long.

A digital society built on top of #adtech and #bigtech is a grotesque dystopia but somehow the message takes too long to reach the brain of the dinosaur.

"We are a global service!"

No you aren't. Nobody in the payment business is a global service. It's literally impossible to provide a global payments service without enabling fraud, money laundering, or terrorism. Some legal environments simply don't work practically with other laws. Some countries are too small. Just publish a fucking list of countries you support.

Why is it so common for payment providers to just not make it possible for you to find out whether your country is eligible for their service without signing up.

I get limiting the countries you service. Regulatory environments vary. But please, for the love of all that's holy, put a fucking list of countries that can use your service somewhere on your fucking website.
