@mnl Let me put it this way: if The Onion was the only form of commentary, critique, and work to change things we had, we'd be in real trouble. But having The Onion is net positive to result in changing society, because The Onion is very good at being able to produce a clear critique through humor that can be very hard to articulate otherwise.

And dare I say, the reason the post keeps popping by your timeline is not because people here are nihilistic and don't care. It keeps popping by your timeline because people enjoy it because they *do* care, and appreciate what the post is demonstrating!

A part-embroidered lineart of Heinz Doofenshmirtz, a man wearing a labcoat with an evil grin on his face. I filled in the labcoat and am working my way through the hands, which are held together as if Doofenshmirtz is scheming something evil. So far, the hands barely look like hands because hands are hard to draw and harder to embroider, but they'll probably look like hands once I've done. Probably.

A view looking toward Nikko's Shinkyo Bridge on a rainy day. The red-lacquered bridge spans the Daiya River in a short, curving arc; healthy-looking green trees and shrubs crowd in close to the stone foundations on either side. Beyond the bridge, the steep tree-covered mountain landscape fades away into the mist; above, the sky is overcast, and rain continues to fall on the scene.

A word of advice people, that comes from experience.

When you're feeling down because all the good people are dying, make stuff. I mean it. It doesn't have to be good, it doesn't have to be useful (tbh its best if its daft). It'll keep your hands busy and often it'll distract your brain too.

And at the end of it, you've made a thing. And maybe you'll feel less sad, maybe you won't, but I always find the world feels less awful when I've been making random stuff for the sake of it.

What’s the point of posting or boosting this kind of stuff? Who does it help? Who is it for?

If those are your ideals, then why not live them? If the answer is because the goal is to share your ideals to a broader audience, your statement becomes contradictory.

What upsets me is that the only response to such a post is fostering a feeling of apathy and resignation. “Oh well, I agree but nothing I can do about it” (see the comments). Either you believe (as I do) that computation can lead to progress, or … wtf are you doing on social media and using computers in the first place, or worse, actively using your energy to build _more_ software.

A toot by christine lemme-Webber stating “the safest form of computing is still abstinence.”
