XScreenSaver 6.16 out now.

Four new hacks this time, two by me: floppy, graphstat, amigajuggler and polarnight.

There is no iOS version because Apple recently began rejecting App Store uploads that do not use the iOS 26 SDK. It is impossible to target that SDK with anything earlier than Xcode 26, which requires macOS 15 or 16. Since I am staying on macOS 14 for the foreseeable future, there will be no XScreenSaver iOS release for the foreseeable future.

what we have here is the 21st century version of the mechanical turk. there is an assload of human work going on in the background at anthropic to make the system seem more capable than it really is.

the Translate-Anything system can not generalize, so they need to cheat. they feed it problem & answer, and just have it learn everything by heart, inter-/extrapolate the rest. and all errors are in the interpolations of course. so they add more answers. and so on. it never ends. it. never. ends.

believing that LLMs will soon be able to take on economically valuable tasks fully autonomously because their outputs sound increasingly plausible and surely it's just a matter of extending that intelligence into agency is like believing that pretty soon video games are going to have food in them that smells and tastes good because the graphics look so good now and surely it's just a matter of expanding to the other senses

Yesterday something made me think of Garfield. A man, living alone, with a cat? Should've been gay. [many thought-trains later] I should make a "comic strip" of me and my cats. So one of the many things I'm trying to do, as I reorient myself in the computer world without Debian as a foundation to build on, is looking for a new operating system.

The Linux kernel project accepts slop contributions, the debian project accepts slop contributions. Where does that leave me?

Put simply, I'm looking for a daily driver operating system that I can trust to be made by people, and not contain the product of an automated plagiarism machine.

the trait i've come to identify as most foul in proprietary software and everything non-free-software is: betrayal.

i avoid proprietary software because, eventually, it will betray me. it will do something against my interest in favor of its creator, or owner, or whomever is in control of the hardware it runs on.

I keep seeing political influencers saying you should protect your vote by using ballot drop boxes instead of mailing your completed ballot and, yeah sure drop boxes are great, I use them every time, but THAT'S NOT THE THREAT. The threat this time is that the USPS won't deliver your ballot to you in the first place. You can't use a drop box if you don't have a ballot to drop.

I've been thinking about where I want to spend the rest of my life. My mother will soon pass, and I will be leaving Florida.

I want to be around my people. I want to be around more Puerto Ricans; more Black people.

The problem is, I hate tropical weather. I want seasons. I want sweaters. I own Iron Rangers. I want to wear them.

There's only one place on earth that has Puerto Ricans and four proper seasons.

Y'all, I think I'm moving to The South Bronx. 😍

This is absolutely sensational: journalists went undercover pretending to be American millionaires wanting to donate to Reform under the table. They have Farage and two of his most senior henchmen on video setting the deal up, in their own words.

Sensational not because it's a shocking reveal, because they're shown to be exactly the kind of people most of us expected them to be, but sensational because they got the bastards on tape admitting to it.

There will be a second by-election in Clacton even sooner than anticipated, I suspect, and I'm not even sure Farage will be standing in it this time.

But when I do, I... uh... really struggle. I'm not a professional and haven't taken any classes. Anyway, here is one.

A meme image apparently named "sudden clarity Clarence". It shows a somewhat fish eyed view of a crowded party scene. In the center is a man staring in a direction off camera with wide eyes and mouth slightly open creating an expression that can be interpreted as sudden realization. Over the image, I've placed the text, "The Earth... is the ultimate nazi bar problem" Basically, this is what my face did a moment ago when I had that thought.

This release fixes a possible miscompilation in vtable generation. Under certain circumstances, Rust 1.98.0 incorrectly puts a null pointer where a function pointer should be.
