WSJ One morning in June, three paralyzed military veterans in wheelchairs from rural Pennsylvania arrived at the office of Sen. John Fetterman for a long-awaited meeting to discuss legislation that would improve their care. Fetterman’s staff greeted them with bad news: The Pennsylvania Democrat had to cancel. He’d told his staff he may have eaten something bad and wasn’t feeling well, according to people familiar with the matter. Less than an hour after his staffers met with the veterans in his place, Fetterman walked into his office, showing no signs of illness. He had an appointment he didn’t want to miss, he told staff: an interview on Fox News to discuss Israel and the war in Iran.

I know this is a bit of a pipe dream, but just a few very simple policy changes could transform our entire society:

1. Tax the rich. A wealth tax that applies not just to income, but investments and capital gains as well.

2. No outside money in politics. Political donation limited to individual contributors and max donations capped.

2. Break up monopolies, enforce anti-trust, no vertical integration.

There's PLENTY of money in our society for everything we need; universal healthcare, free college education, ample public housing and food for everyone. The problem is that it's being sucked up and hoarded by the 1%.

Just look at how much Amazon makes in illegal grift alone! (image pull quote via @pluralistic)

Chart showing that the top 100 richest people in the US own more than the entire bottom 50% of the population combined.
Let me remind you: payola is Amazon's single largest source of profits. When I was researching Enshittification, Amazon's take from payola was in the mid-$30 billion. A year later, when I did tour stops with Tim Wu (who was promoting his excellent book The Age of Extraction), I learned that this number had climbed to more than $50 billion. This year, it's on track to top $80 billion.

So I want to start out by saying this feels like a complete delegation of responsibility on the part of the UK government to basically tell households to fend for themselves if the basic necessities of life are interrupted, rather than accepting that it's the government's job to ensure that they're not. And also to say that I'm going to talk about helpful things that require purchasing, which not everyone can afford to do. And there are a lot of households in this country who can't even afford the food they need today, let alone to stockpile in advance, and that is also a result of the government neglecting its role to look after the people of the country.
