The route to the Clay problem through a smooth force, options c and d in Fefferman’s statement of the problem, is the route Luis and Diego opened and the one Levent and I had quietly chosen to attack. Almost nobody else I know of was working on it. It is not the direction one arrives at in a few days by giving a model the problem statement. When I heard “forced,” it was a bright red flag. [...]
Levent had been told by Sebastien “very little human input” had been used. This turned out not to be true. Over the course of the call, as members of their team sent Sebastien corrections and details over their internal chat, it emerged that an entire team had been working on the problem, that this was one of a number of things that was tried [...]
I asked when the first prompt had been sent by them. This question was not answered directly by OpenAI for some time. Eventually it was agreed that it had been sent in the past few days, after information about our work had reached OpenAI
I asked whether the model had been trained on, or had access to, our sessions in Codex, into which we had been putting all our drafts for the whole of this project. I was told the model did not look up user data. I asked again, about training, and I did not get an answer [...]
I said that if OpenAI released its result in the way proposed I would go public with what happened. The reply was, “Why would you ruin your career?” I replied that I am an academic, and asked why he thought going public would ruin my career. The reply was, “If you don’t want me to be nice, then I don’t have to be nice.”

Well there's the shoe dropped: the terms of service have always allowed openAI to use your data essentially however they please, and apparently they will in fact use it to steal your work.

New video! I set up a podcast recently but didn't like the state of "podcasting platforms", which are often pushing slop and generally seem like an expensive boondoggle.

So I spun up a podcast RSS feed using a simple static site generator.

There's been a lot of press about how useful AI has been in attacking longstanding mathematical problems, but the idea that your research can be used to beat you to publication ought to have a rather chilling effect on the practice.

The other day, I wanted to see if alcohol-free port existed. The top search link went to a page of the 20 best alcohol-free ports! Except none of them were port, they were all spirits (not even other fortified wines). The ‘AI’ summary described a fictional process for removing alcohol from port and had two citations, neither of which supported the claim. The next 30 pages were all LLM slop that talked about what port is for a long time before saying that there’s no alcohol-free version.

I have been using the web since the mid ‘90s and it has never been this bad. Anyone advocating for ‘AI’ is advocating for a future where this damage is spread to all facets of life.

It's hard to stop other from introducing LLMs everywhere, maybe even impossible. But that doesn't mean that you can't do anything.

The first important step is to publicly say "NO", to refuse to participate. Even if you might need some software that's slopified, make your personal choices heard. Be vocal.

The best way to show people that another world is possible is by creating it. Even if just for your small community.

I understand that saying outright no at work may be complicated now, with so much money and so much pressure to cram it everywhere, but we should not underestimate our ability to protect our field from the grift, the addiction, and the breakage.
Keep learning, keep coding, keep the community alive. In Lyon, the next no-gen-AI "Code is Art" is in less than two weeks! https://stolat.town/@marcink/117164228533975996

These people's hard work, done in the open with Math Inc pretending to contribute until recently, built the structure and got most of the way there with the proof. Until Math Inc decided to scoop them, for the reason that their capital allowed them to write unmaintainable code at a faster pace than researchers could write useful proofs.
