I agree with this take and I mostly agree with hex’s politics, but this is becoming a pet peeve: “destructive optimization of meaningless metrics in service of pleasing an authority distant from material reality” is not “capitalism”. Read “Mao’s Great Famine” if you want to see someone build this exact machine for national and ideological pride rather than profit maximization.

Right now we need to move very far left but we must not delude ourselves that left politics are incorruptible.

Sure, "AI" might kill us all, but it's rather more likely that the folks running "AI" companies are hyping up that fear in order to have their pet legislators introduce bills that advantage their positions while kneecapping their competitors and to give them a little more runway to figure out how to avoid the coming massive economic collapse they are still in the process of creating. The apocalypse is far more likely to be caused by the tech CEOs than their spicy autocorrect programs.

Part of the problem, I think, is that some otherwise well-meaning people genuinely don't know how to distinguish between engagement and control when it comes to dealing with children, in part because they don't fully recognize the humanity of children.
