Now it's official: On Thursday, the EU Commission will propose a new law they call the #KIDSAct. It will ban young people from a range of different online services and be enforced by the Commission themselves.

Enamel pin shaped like a flowing black banner with silver edges. The text reads "I HAVE NO MONEY AND ALSO I'M GAY" in decorative Gothic-style font, with a small rainbow arch at the bottom right.

@liberty I'm making that switch as well. I used a Scheme (forget which one) pretty extensively a long time back, but more recently have been in Python for everything.

My personal biggest Pro is that Guile is *fun*. With Emacs and the set of plugins Spritely recommends Scheme feels like flying, very little between my thoughts and code, in a way that if Python ever did it has long since ceased to.

I switched from Python to Guile as my go-to scripting language a few months ago and I've been enjoying it.

Pros:
- Guile is a Scheme
- Guile is slop-free
- Guile is faster than Python
- Guile can easily be embedded in other programs
- Guile easily compiles to WASM with Hoot

Cons:
- Guile's syntax can be less readable
- Guile's ecosystem is smaller
- Guile is less documented

It's like, I know what an "h" is supposed to look like but I often can't put my hand such that the curve is halfway up the stem and the other side of the curve is roughly one character-width away. Often it is much narrower and shorter than it's supposed to be.

I sometimes wonder if I have dysgraphia but it's never been officially diagnosed, and I rely on handwriting a lot (can't blame it on The Screens either!) so kinda do want to improve

Hey, does anyone else get this problem?

If I write individual letters for handwriting practice I can form them perfectly fine. I can write words for handwriting practice without too much difficulty.

As soon as I apply to actual writing all bets are off. What are letters? What are words? Why not bunch up the "w" and "a" in "ways"? Why not give each and every "e" a unique style? And so on and so on and so on. Not deliberately, it's because the moment I think about anything other than the shape of the letters I can't get my arm to make the proper shapes of the letters, only something that looks in the loosest possible way like the shapes.

My ability to draw seems mostly intact, as when I draw I'm just thinking about the shapes of the lines.

I've tried doing handwriting practice and LOL it doesn't seem to help and it's just the most discouraging shit in the world, up there with "just stop getting distracted".

Is there something wrong with my handwriting practice? 30 years of ingrained habits? A neurodevelopmental difference related issue?

I’ve been thinking along the same lines, with a few additional notes:

- Outsourcing was never rolled back. Industry went abroad and never returned
- Companies overall adjusted and now, more or less, benefit from it
- Much if that is because many companies also outsourced design and engineering, so lower coordination costs
- Most products are still worse than pre-outsourcing
- Domestic labour was pretty close to destroyed.
- Countries that went all-in on outsourcing effectively deindustrialised

I've thought often the last couple of years about how the “Fire your developers! Use AI!!” craze feels really similar to the outsourcing / offshoring mania of a few decades ago — and how many of the same problems it shares:

- Cost-cutting shiny thing break management brains
- but turns out generating code was the easy part
- and building cumulative shared understanding is everything
- and shortcuts around that dig you in a hole really fast
- and that hole is full of code that nobody can maintain.

Something in the water, I guess. Something always in the water that once in a while explodes when conditions are right, like algae blooms.
