…a police dept or city gets to •choose• what the “shots fired” maps look like by choosing where to place the mics. They decide where the gunshots should be first, then gather the data to match.

Example 2:
SF is too cruel to take care of its homeless population as well as NYC does. NYC has more homeless people than SF, both in absolute numbers and per capita. But the difference in the cruelty is visible.https://hachyderm.io/@mekkaokereke/111363645802219678
Example 3:
SF doesn't celebrate politicians that just relentlessly make quality of life improvements like Mamdani. When Matt Haney noticeably reduced the number of human turds on the street, it wasn't heralded as a major win.https://hachyderm.io/@mekkaokereke/109956455505195549
Example 4:
SF people with degrees in Applied Math from places like MIT and CalTech, and job titles like Data Scientist, still believed the laughably impossible math that Black people could shoplift Fortune 500 companies out of business during the Covid lockdowns.🤦🏿♂️NYC people with the same degrees in Applied Math from MIT and CalTech and job titles like Quant, or Trader, did not believe those laughably bad lies. Because they can read a P&L and an earnings report.
So SF was more primed for government cruelty against starving Black people than NYC was.

@cwebber It's interesting because on the IPO thing it's a win-win. A company that wants to IPO sounds powerful and important. A company that *doesn't* want to IPO, such as OpenAI whose IPO would probably underperform expectations if it happened tomorrow, can point to the "alignment" "safety" concerns as an excuse to put the IPO off ( https://bsky.app/profile/dryad.technology/post/3mve53u5jb22i )
This demonstrates how much more powerful lies are than truth. Presumably a truth wouldn't usually prove *both* a thing and its opposite

It's pretty simple. You're hearing "We're so scared of the AIs, we need to reign them in" from the very US companies building and selling them for two reasons:
- They're about to IPO, and it's amazing marketing for them
- They want a regulatory moat, since they're deeply worried about the open weight LLMs. They want everyone dependent on this tech and to be *the only ones legally permitted to dispense it*.

And isn't it odd that militaries using AI to select civilian targets wasn't the cue to pace the frontier??? But the CEOs have IPOs coming up, and suddenly they all agree that now's the time to pace the frontier! ISN'T THAT ODD????

Jacob had almost zero footprint, wiped his X before the post, and had only been at Anthropic for a few months. Within a few minutes of the WSJ dropping the story, he does his announcement post on the twitters, and is instantly boosted by some of the biggest names in the AI field, which is not how organic engagement works for an account with no followers. His follower count goes up by hundreds of thousands, he gets media attention everywhere, and suddenly everyone is talking about LLM like it's a mind, and not a computer with an OFF switch.
At the same time, Nvidia hard launches the term "AI Factory" to rebrand datacenters and try and raise 500 billion dollars from your retirement fund.

OK so the reason this is cool is because now the color sliders are not being rendered pixel by pixel, doing manual interpolation and converting each pixel into RGB before painting it. It is now rendering it as a gradient in the target color space and using the renderer's support for color spaces to convert the final thing into RGB for the widget.
This means that gradient interpolation in other color spaces works. And that rainbow bar is possible with just two color stops.
NfNitLoop ("Cody Casterline 🏳️🌈") wrote:
@vi_mi You got it! `const` -> `static` was the fix.
I guess `const` just causes the variable to be inlined at every call site. Where `static` creates a single instance that can be referenced.
I'd missed learning/internalizing that nuance since, when I reach for const, it's usually for things that are `Copy` anyway, like a `u64` or `&str`.
