Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Ideas are technologies. So as an anarchist FOSS technologist, let me give you a technology for $free.99, as they say - a technology that will forever change the way you parse conference talks, AWS product descriptions, and cloudtech whitepapers.

"Scale is where software development ethics go to die."

The one thing to be careful of, is this will give you the wrong *kind* of negative impression of a lot of speakers. It's half-useful to hear scale described as an unexamined good and think that a speaker is crowing about building the torment nexus, because that *does* accurately reflect the long-term goals of the speaker's employers. But you have to understand that most of these people don't have the class-consciousness to hear the problem in their words, and that's actually much scarier.

I will hold back on installing that until I'm more certain, though. I don't want nor need ai crap on any phone (or anywhere).

I have spent some time today pondering about genAI policies and Free software projects.

My position is "no genAI, thanks". I have examined my own thinking, and my conclusion remains the same.

I like @IzzyOnDroid's policy:

If I am wrong, and in the future, all the ethical and other issues are resolved, thenhere *at that point* one can always change one's mind.

But if one hold one's nose out of some belief that AI is inevitable, or that the outputs justify the harms, and says "yes" now, it is much harder to change the position later.

A fun, (probably) obscure example of art I like to come back to from time to time is Darkest of the Hillside Thickets' "20 Minutes of Oxygen":

I love everything about it, and when I later learned they made that campy video, I loved it even more.

The lines:

"If I had the brains, that's what I'd do
Build that time door and poke my head through
It's too late now and I'm still dumb
Twenty minutes of oxygen"

Speaks to me... You know, in a metaphorical way.

IMPORTANT NOTE: the channel hosting the video appears to have gone slop for some reason, but I know the video and the song predate the current slopageddon. The Thickets' actual channel is here if you choose to explore their work more:

It wasn't directed at me, but I've been mulling it over. I think there really isn't underrated art. I think there's a lot of overrated art. In other words, some pieces of work (and their creators) become so outrageously famous as to be known by large swaths of people. Mostly by luck, like anything of that nature. Not that the overrated art in question *isn't* good, but just that you can readily find obscure work that is *just* as good, and there's a lot to find.

As long as creators have the means, we find ourselves awash in beautiful, meaningful, poignant, vibrant, awe inspiring art even though most of it will remain obscure. Obscure isn't necessarily bad (although I admit it can make it hard for artists to make a living in hellworld).

Anyway, it would be impossible for me to pick a most underrated work. I could just point in any direction and find something.
