ITS HERE:

BECOME THE THOUSAND SERVERS

Autistici/Inventati’s shutdown left a pretty obvious question behind: what happens when infrastructure movements depend on disappears?

We spent the last couple weeks turning that question into a practical field course on autonomous movement infrastructure.

This is not a guide telling every collective to buy a VPS and become its own ISP. It’s about understanding the systems we already depend on well enough to map them, maintain them, back them up, move them, preserve what matters, and pass that knowledge on.

The course has 13 guide sections and 12 practical lessons. You’ll map the dependencies behind a real project, investigate DNS, SSH into a disposable Linux machine, put something online, inspect what you exposed, make and restore a real backup, destroy and rebuild a service, migrate it, stop being the only administrator, preserve published work, troubleshoot a local network, experiment with another networking model, and teach somebody else what you learned.

No account required. Progress stays in your browser, with export/import and optional private recovery.

The point is not to memorize commands.

The unit of resilience isn’t the machine. It’s the person who can reproduce the machine.

Each one, teach one.

Become the thousand servers.

Black-and-white DIY zine-style poster for Become the Thousand Servers. A large illustrated octopus rises behind several server racks, with tentacles curling around the machines and cables. A laptop marked with an anarchist “A” sits on top. A ribbon across the servers reads “Each one, teach one.” An astronaut floats below among looping cords, plugs, lightning bolts, radio towers, and transmission symbols. Large text at left reads “Become the Thousand Servers.” The bottom banner gives the URL: sabot.media/guides/become-the-thousand-servers.

I’m considering putting my foot down with my friends that just can’t seem to quit using Facebook messenger, even when I give them numerous other ways to get a hold of me. Sure, it’s a lot more effort to ask me what I’m up to rather than reading it online but I have my own website, I have my Fedi account.

The messenger app is slowly becoming unusable, the facebook app has so many problems I find it a chore to keep up with friends even when I am looking at their profile exclusively, and a whole canyon of other things.

I’m considering just leaving my friends with a final message and then deleting my account and if they can’t SMS me or send me an email, then they like Facebook more than me.

This particular flavour is certainly interesting. It is trying to be funky I guess? But it is also incredibly tinny. Lo-fi but not in a good relaxing way, and more in a "do I seriously have to listen to this for 10 minutes" way.

Have to admit though it's nice having slightly more upbeat music on the other end of the phone line for once

The two major justifications for liberal anti-Latino racism were:

1. Latinos handed Trump the election
2. Majority Latino men voted for Trump

Turns out, neither are true (and even it were, still racism).

1. If you take out all Latino votes from the 2024 presidential election, not a single electoral vote changes.

2. New poll with a larger sample size finds that Latino men voted Harris 56-43%.

I can almost hear all the dirty deletes across all the social media platforms. No apologies though

Latino/Hispanic Vote • Presidential vote. Latinos voted for the Democratic candidate Kamala Harris (62%) over the Republican candidate Donald Trump (37%) by a +25 margin. • A majority of Hispanic men voted for Harris (56%-43%), and a supermajority of Hispanic women (66%-32%). • Hispanic male vote between ages 18- 39(51%-48%) • Among Latino subgroups, the highest level of Harris support was from Puerto Ricans (65%, followed by Mexican Americans (63%). Highest Trump support was from Cuban Americans (54%).

the reason that its so funny that this devolves into "free VPS for everyone" is that this is sort of the shortest path to what they want to do and it must be this way or it's shit. you want a persistent computational system for someone that can do very general tasks. ok! that sounds like a virtual machine, there's lots of tools for that already. you provision an LLM inside a box and let it do computer things, you even tell it that it should be forthright about being an LLM in a box. so in order for it to do anything useful at all that you could call a "personal life assistant" it needs to be able to do arbitrary computation, rather than a specific set of canalized actions. i was surprised that there was a switch to allow arbitrary network access, but that too is somewhat inevitable given the needs of the product. you do a ton of engineering to prevent the LLM from going off the rails and doing something terrible, but by its design it should be maximally permissive to the human using it. so here you are - provisioning a persistent, permissive computing environment, run by something with an infinitely large attack surface - for your customer base that consists of 99.9% of people who have never paid you a dime, so, pretty much for free.

congratulations: the only form that this kind of product can take is a botnet factory.
