All this self-host techie discourse sounds, to me, a bit like a self-sufficiency dystopia. If we were discussing how bad public transportation is, and someone replied "just transport yourself", most of us would say "that's not it". But when we discuss wanting to get out of large American tech or of nazi-sympathyzing companies, the solution can't be "just host your services yourself". Having to do everything yourself is not my idea of a functioning society.

Not everyone can or should self-host, but the technology that enables it—federation, open standards, and vendor independence—also allows cooperatives, municipalities, and community groups to run their own infrastructure.

There's a whole legal/philosophical argument that software is a form of speech, and we don't punish harms done with speech, so we can't punish harms done with software. But that's not true at all either! There are very strict limits for speech, even in the USA where the limits are as loose as they can get! Fox News had to pay $787.5 million dollars! Fraud is still a crime even if you do the crime entirely with words!

I recorded the audio for this one using a lavalier microphone (a Primo EM258 capsule) and, even though you can hear a lot more of the room and it needed quite a bit more work, I'm finding that I don't hate the sound.
I'm thinking maybe lavalier for shorts/TikToks and the Shure SM57 for the longer videos/podcasts from now on
