I looked something up on Stack Overflow, thought the existing answers were kind of meh, mulled the problem over, found a •much• better answer to the question, and then…I didn’t post it. I thought about Stack Overflow itself and all the harvesters and scrapers digesting my answer and not giving me one cent or even credit, and I just…didn’t.

The capture and extraction of the commons come with costs that are slow, pervasive, and hard to measure.

Ruh-roh. Spotted a Waymo vehicle after dropping the kiddo off at school. Not only that. I think it actively plays in favour of the ‘AI’ techbros and their constant lies and overinflated narratives.

Namespaces are great. This is pretty neat https://blog.python.org/2026/09/language-summit-2026-namespaces/#new-standard-library-module-names-are-constrained

That said, please don't use STD as Python's default namespace.

py or python would be much better.

The Hire Human Artists directory is taking a little break.

I am very very happy to hear multiple reports (at least 3!) that people are finding artists and paying them to get work done.

The next step is making sure there's LOTS of people doing that. So for the month of Oct, I'm going to be trying to find places to talk about this directory.

If this is you or you know of a place that needs to hear about this, let me know. Heck, I'll even write up a unique blog post for you if you want

@jschauma That isn't an option either. By accepting automatic/frequent updates, you are just adding more new vulns, and more of them are real vulns not fake ones like the stuff they're reporting.

The "1313 CVEs" are a lie. The hard problem is finding the 10-20 that are actually vulns and the 1-5 that are actually relevant to you amid the slopbros' DDoS attack on our attention. 🤬

The only solution is to close off all of the attack surface. Disable module loading entirely or switch to allow list model to block all of the "IPsec shit nobody asked for". Disable io_uring and other optional niche syscalls. Don't give out user accounts, and don't assume running network-facing junk daemons is safe just because they're running as nobody or chrooted. Etc.

Kind of amazed at all of the people who say "AI" made them better systems-thinkers when none of their analysis includes the models they rely on, let alone the cos that build them, or the finance that enables it all

The whole point of "systems-thinking" is that the system is larger than the object.

I still remember the day in 1976 when Gary Kildall typed in "dir" to an "A>" prompt on his hazeltine green-screen character display to show me a directory listing on his 8080-based, eight-bit computer running the first release of CP/M, the first real microcomputer operating system (that Gary wrote). He gave me a shy but proud look and asked what I thought. It seemed miraculous to me, and I was hooked.

Anyway, I just tried to rename a file on my Windows 10 PC and midway through the operation Microsoft deleted the file instead. I guess we've really come a long way since those early days 50 years ago.
