It's kind of infuriating how, as soon as you try to do good, you're held to impossible standards.

People are shit and companies are shit all the time and nobody bats an eye. But do volunteer work for your FOSS community, start a project that tries to do things more ethically, just be visibly not shit, and people left and right come out of the woodwork to point out all the ways in which you are not being absolutely flawless and perfect, and all the work that needs doing that you're not yet taking upon you.

The people actually doing the work are also the people who are being asked to do even more, and who are being critised the most. It's a really insiduous pattern and we all need to be better at recognising it and squashing it.

This is one of the reasons that despite my strong feelings I think we need patience and grace for a lot of maintainers. Particularly the ones who have been good on DEI, good on CoCs, good on technical excellence, good on compassionate processes… if they are bad on AI, I'm not going to pretend that's good, but also maybe it doesn't obviate decades of otherwise massively self-effacing service to the community, and *continuing* service even using a harmful tool

Oh, and legal liability, which would require a congressional act of god to immunize them from.

Trust me: I will be doing this field for a long time to come, and you too will be doing yours. Do not believe these out of touch plutocrats.”

“In the meantime, some of the interviews with the billionaires are just mind numbing. Jensen Huan on Ezra Klein last week seemed to suggest that the task of automating our field had essentially been completed. Ross Douthat interviewing Dario Amodei claimed that it's well-established that AI can read a "scan" better than a radiologist. Don't forget Geoff Hinton saying in 2016 that AI would replace all radiologists in 5 years...

These people have zero idea what we do. And If they have zero idea what WE do, then that means they've got zero idea what anyone else does. Rather than being the first ones to be replaced, I contend that we are canaries in the coal mine for this technology and why it will not wreak the havoc that our billionaire overlords are hoping to scare everybody into.

They are just too far removed and self-satisfied to realize how incorrect their predictions are. Not to mention how useless their technology is in the real world when lives are at stake.”

“I'm truly just blown away by how little impact AI has had in our field, even when it comes to pure diagnostics.

My hospital employs a limited number of "models" for basic tasks like pulmonary nodule detection, and even then they suck to such a point that I stopped using them early on in my residency.

Beyond that, I have never heard of anything remotely approaching the point of analyzing CT, MR, US, PET, or catheter angiography accurately and producing a complete report.

The technology is not just in "early stages"...it's plainly nonexistent. And the "cutting edge" research that I review ain't exactly making much progress (it's usually for much more banal bullshit, like fixing reporting errors, and triaging critical findings...which is all well and good, but only modestly impactful in the setting of a true clinical workflow).”

Apparently when you’re worth $2 trillion, a data center is a science experiment and your CEO’s $4 billion payday is research.

@servo is currently experiencing luxury problems: because of so many new contributors helping out, our CI time has increased significantly. Before we could merge within 45 minutes, now the average is 3,5 hours.

Based on our analysis, the MacOS runners are the bottleneck. To add more of these runners, extra funding is needed.

If you want to help out Servo, consider donating at https://opencollective.com/servo so we can improve our CI time. Thanks everyone for their interest in the project!

A thought I had while out shopping on the AI cult/"true believers":

They don't necessarily believe in their own narrative that chatbots are intelligent or progressing towards intelligence.

What they fundamentally believe in is The Singularity.

What they think they need is to rob humanity's resources long enough for their chatbots to *get lucky* and vomit out something that's capable of the "recursive self-improvement" they believe is possible.

Saying they believe we're on the right path is just a justification for hoarding the resources.

Much like religious fanatics throughout history, they want us to believe ridiculous things about their god for the sake of organizing social and economic structures that will make their god's power real.
