Switzerland has lost almost one-fifth of its ice in just five years,
in a dramatic reshaping of the Alpine country whose big white glaciers have been reduced to moonlike rock deserts, scientists say.

Swiss glaciers shrank by 5.5% in the first eight months of 2026,
according to an annual monitoring report,
after a summer of scorching heatwaves that followed a winter with little snow.
The reduction in ice volume falls just shy of the record set in 2022
and brings the total loss of glacier ice since 2021 to 19.4%.

What we are seeing now is a complete explosion of these melt rates,
leading to the disintegration of glaciers.

They’re really just falling apart.

As far as they can tell, there's nowhere else in the universe where they could stay alive for ten seconds. And what do they call their fragile little slice of space and time? They call it real life. In a universe where it is known that whole galaxies can explode, they think there's things like 'natural justice' and 'destiny'. Some of them even believe in democracy... "The new #documentary "Reading the World" profiles #PauloFreire, the acclaimed Brazilian educator whose revolutionary approach to teaching connected literacy to critical thinking and democratic participation. It draws on rare archival footage of 1960s #Brazil and weaves together the memories of farmers, students and educators who took part in Freire's culture circles, his method of teaching adults to read in as little as 40 hours by drawing on their own lives, communities and experiences. At the time, Brazil's illiterate population was barred from voting, so education also opened the door to political participation. The experiment was abruptly halted in 1964 when Brazil's military overthrew President João Goulart in a U.S.-backed coup that led to Freire's imprisonment and exile."

I have never seen this warning on a GH page before. And the fact that GH gave in and put it on the "AI Torture Chamber" repo after mass complaints on X from idiots who think LLMs are sentient tracks with the absurdity of this timeline.

A screenshot of a GitHub page for a repository titled "ai-torture-chamber" by the user "terrafying". The page is displaying a content warning. In the center of a dark background, there is a circular icon containing a red warning triangle with an exclamation mark. Below this icon, large white text reads: "This project may contain violent content including disturbing themes, images, and/or video." Underneath the warning text are two buttons: a bright blue one labeled "Discover other projects on GitHub" and a dark grey one labeled "View repository". At the bottom of the page, under a section titled "Additional resources," there are links to "Block @terrafying" and "GitHub Community Guidelines." The standard GitHub footer with links to Terms, Privacy, Security, and other site pages is also visible at the very bottom, along with the copyright "© 2026 GitHub, Inc." The top navigation bar shows typical GitHub repository tabs, including "Code" (which is currently selected), "Issues" (with 22 open), "Pull requests", "Agents", and "Actions".

"While so many of us were focused on fictional superintelligent machines that we were told could hypothetically cause human extinction, however, there was a more serious story being reported. A series of events almost got us to armageddon, not caused by “rogue, superintelligent AI”, but by government reliance on error-prone systems that are marketed by their manufacturers as being close to superintelligent."

If you don't read Icelandic, then basically a supermajority of Icelandic experts with a university degree uses and loves "AI". Which feels accurate tbh. It feels largely impossible to find an “AI” sceptic in the wild here. People hate datacentres, though 🤷🏻‍♂️

IIRC Viska is a union for those with degrees who don't have a more specialised union to join.
