Hello, I’m an actual technology ethicist. This is weird and creepy but LLMS ARE NOT ALIVE OMG

The unethical thing is to treat them as if they are! Anthropomorphising LLMs does actual living humans far more of a disservice than even this weird creepy behaviour.

AI Safety Is Mostly A Sex Cult In Berkeley, California SE GYGES SEP 24 READ IN APP These people shouldn’t make policy. There has been a great effort over many years to distance AI Safety discussion from its origin and intellectual center, because its center is a predatory sex cult started by a fan fiction author. Since those involved want to be taken seriously, they have to hide that. Everyone else working in AI Safety is, effectively, a smokescreen for this core group and their ideas. We might some day have “AI Safety”, as a science or policy area, that is not primarily a sex cult in Berkeley, California, but it does not currently exist.

I absolutely adore doing these things with my friend group. I have found, after many times, I am not really a con-goer and instead extremely value these sort of smaller meets. The larger a gathering gets, the less comfortable I tend to feel. But that is social anxiety and not what you are talking about here.

I love doing these a lot, as they allow people to talk and catch up without dealing with the stress of a convention.

I agree with you on all of these points, in honesty. You really hammered this home. A Youtuber I watch was almost chased off the internet for a comment about shoes and this got blown so out of proportion it wasn't funny, and eventually they returned to a pretty big fanfare. It was largely thanks to the support of two individuals that saved them when everyone else turned away, and one of them is one of teh kindest folks on the planet when it comes to helping his friends. And that whole situation had NOTHING to do with Furries!

It takes a surprising amount these days to grow and accept something and not end up being flung under someone else's bus wheels all because of a tiny, small thing. And those often get awfully blown up on social media. And it does sometimes feel like I'm walking on eggshells and burning coals whilst trying to spin plates. One wrong move and you can end up being booted out the door.

It would be nice if folks had a touch more forgiveness. Actually talked a little more when an issue arises. Stop following them for a couple days until it all blows over.

And maybe, when something you see on social media starts spiking up your temperature, put the phone down and come back later.

I've started (albeit poorly) to curb the constant browsing on the socials. They aren't necessarily the full blown problem, but they are platforms people use and turn to when they wish to complain or state something. It's easy to jump to a conclusion then and there then to think a bit more on it. So best put it down and pick up my 3DS instead, that Larvitar isn't going to catch itself.

Apparently I had a lot to say about this, so this was as usual a very good post. Always look forward to these Soatok, you keep inspiring me to get back into my own Blog, and I definitely should...

something it took me a very long time to figure out, like, embarrassingly long, since the way they teach you about it at school avoids this uncomfortable part, is that 'peaceful protest' is fundamentally a threat of violence. people out in the streets holding objects, currently placards, imply later they might be holding something else. it is called a 'demonstration', in the same way that testing a nuclear weapon is a demonstration, it is deterrence through communication of capability and intent

something that irks me about SPAs ("Single Page Applications")... they were originally popularized on the basis of being "more responsive than a normal website"

and for a time, this was actually true! I would know, because I was building them before Facebook was, and in a progressively-enhanced way to boot, something many websites *still* don't do today...

the only problem is... by the time this technique got a name ("SPA") and became popular and widespread, it had *already* stopped being true, because browsers had already improved enough to all but eliminate the UX difference, and IE (the biggest offender here) was already dying.

in other words: the claim that popularized SPAs was never actually true at any point during its streak of popularity. it didn't "used to be true" in any way that matters. the technique was dead before it even got adopted, and has been a walking zombie ever since, coasting by on superstitious beliefs of performance.

Like, don’t mentioned it 30 times per day, but sharing your own struggles and accepting others feedback (and perhaps also some praise :blobfoxwink:) is definitely something these online and friend spaces are for!

It’s not fun to talk about these things with unwanting recipients, but it can at least help to talk about that with people who can sympathise with the struggle.

I am not a fan of any self help books at all but Maybe the cure to save this reading decline is not to shame others when they want to read anything or listen to something. #Reading #Education
