🥳 The new feature that built into some.pics now allow you to post to mastodon is such a great add. Finally found some time to integrate it in my Obsidian plugin and found out however @neatnik put this great feature together I can always share it later and doesn't have to be right at original posting. As always thanks for the great work on adding to all these fun things. 👏

@noracodes I know the kids. The kids use "AI" as a pejorative. They hate it more than we do. Almost everyone hates it. The people that actually like this shit are a noisy minority. The battle isn't lost. Most of the datacenters will never be built, and the companies trying to build them will fail; it's already starting to happen.
Opposing CoPilot wasn't pointless. A bunch of people ended up quitting GitHub because of it. They lost a lot of talent and organizational knowledge because of it, tried to lean on AI to make up for it, and now the whole thing is a flaming mess perpetually on the edge of self-destruction. By going all-in on CoPilot, GitHub did an amazing speedrun from the center of the software universe to a punchline in under 2 years.

yes, let's talk about AI regulation, the kind of regulation that makes it illegal/unprofitable for bad actors to stripmine the commons and release this kind of poison into the informational ecosystem. but that's not the conversation about regulation that they want to have.

why would i take time to do anything on my phone to organize it, or make it nice? its a little garbage spyware toy which can't do anything properly. it's the most patronizing machine in the world. every second i have to use that thing, or even look at it, is a second i could be spending doing literally anything else, for example, doing something properly on an actual computer, or looking at a nice wall or something

one of my less obvious frustrations with capitalism as an ideology is that it forces people into *creating* negative externalities, not just suffering them
example: if the work you want to do looks like "collecting and compiling data", then there's really only two options for making a living off that under capitalism: either you collect and compile *private* data, which infringes on people's agency, or you collect public/informational data and you sell (semi-)exclusive access to it, creating information inequality tied to wealth in the process
there is no reliable way to make a living off doing this work for the public benefit; if this kind of work is your passion, your *only* real options for actually doing it are ways that harm society, despite there being plenty of legitimate purposes for data compilation on paper

The best-kept secret of (continental) European universities is that many have relatively small tuition fees, even for international students, and many have courses taught in English. (I know because I got an offer from one of them 😜). It can be a route to getting a visa for a lot of countries too.
Unfortunately the UK does not have this kind of fee structure (it is very expensive for UK students and even more expensive for international students).
It's a big step and definitely not one to be taken on a whim; notably I chose a UK university for various reasons. It's really important to do a bunch of research especially when the university system is less familiar. But the option's certainly there

For any burned out software developer who can afford it (as well as the logistical aspect of moving house): I recommend going back to uni.
Find something interesting to study, find a department that's a good fit, get permission to take a few years off if you're on good terms with your employer.
No clue what the long-term implications are but so far it's been so nice to have a change of environment and it's done so much for my sense of purpose and general mental health.
(I've tried to caveat this as much as possible because being able to do this is a huge privilege and there are various reasons why someone might not be able to, those reasons are valid, but if you are able to then given the way the software industry is going right now I think there are serious benefits to taking a break or looking for a career change)
