@xgranade Liberals understand the police from a sort of abstract game-theoretic social-contract theory; there are rules which we all implicitly agreed upon when we left the state of nature, yet some (Bad People) will break those rules. Thus we must have referees (Police) who will understand the rules and punish those who transgress. Conservatives understand this role as a sort of divinely-ordained angelic mantle, whereas liberals will sprinkle the phrase "however imperfect" into this description
