Susan Crawford talked about how phone companies were optimized for billing, and this morning, while waiting for the kiddo to be returned to us from a medical procedure[1], I was thinking about how much of the modern world seems optimized for billing, and I'm wondering how much of that has been facilitated by availability of cheap communications and computers[2].

[2] Cheap in the ignoring externalities sense of cheap.
