Physicist and chemist Esther Conwell was born #OTD in 1922. Her work with Weisskopf on the scattering of electrons by impurities in semiconductors was essential to understanding transistors, and to the development of integrated circuits.

- A low-resolution black and white portrait of physicist Esther Conwell. She is seen from the shoulders up, with her head slightly turned to her left to face the camera. She is wearing a white collared blouse, a pair of glasses with cat eye frames, and a pearl necklace. Her hair is short and she has a very slight smile.
- A color photo of President Barack Obama presented Esther Conwell with the National Medal of Science in 2009. They are both wearing dark suits. Obama's back is to the camera. He is shaking Conwell's right hand with both his hands, and smiling at her. She is wearing glasses, smiling, and looking at the President. The medal, with a red, white, and blue ribbon, has already been placed around her neck. The ceremony took place in the White House; part of a gilt picture frame and the characteristic interior moulding of the WH is visible in the background.
