Here is the four-step process behind the cover picture for Peertube's crowdfunding campaign, which ends in a few hours. I'm really happy that the 'Livestream from your mobile' goal was reached!

A black-and-white line-art image of the Peertube mascot sitting on a large 3D Fediverse logo. The mascot features many elements of the campaign, such as the mobile and editing tools. This is the first step: the sketch. The character is drawn in detail while the background is more sketchy. Some handwritten notes with arrows indicate which nodes of the Fediverse logo will be connected as 'instances': Peertube, Pleroma, Gotosocial and Mastodon.
The second step is to work in grayscale to give a sense of volume and depth, and to prioritise the elements. This helps me decide whether I want a dark on bright composition or the reverse, a light on dark background. I can also manage the light source. For this one, I wanted a big, overcast sky and a very soft light over the whole scene.
The third step involves tinting the grayscale image and setting the overall colour palette. The background is still undetailed, but the full illustration at thumbnail scale is already very close to the final version. Once I am happy with this step, I can move on to the next one.
The final version has all the details and contrast, as well as the effects: the nebulaes, planets, glows and crisp edges on the characters and objects. I'm happy with how I found a colour palette around the orange mascot that I had never explored before. It was tricky to incorporate all the colours of the Fediverse while maintaining an aesthetically pleasing colour palette.
