Macrophotgraphy gives us glimpses into countless tiny, alien worlds all around us.

Example: a few months ago, I went on a walk to a waterfall with my camera. On a mist-soaked log nearby, I found this tiny Penthaleid mite happily munching away on a vibrant purple cluster of Kōtukutuku tree fuchsia pollen.

At only a couple of millimetres in length, the mite had no idea I was there, watching it hungrily devouring this feast.
