I just got this book called Gothic Architecture and Sexuality in the Circle of Horace Walpole and it turns out that the original surrealists themselves agree:

For Breton, the novel was a forerunner of “the surrealist method,” since it emerged from a dream and was composed in a manner akin to the surrealists’ “psychic automatism,” or “automatic writing.”
