The two are so similar in their intent that it's impossible to choose one based on technical grounds (at least for me). So I'm waiting whichever "wins" the most mind share.
(I don't have friends with whom I chat all the time, so choosing whatever they use doesn't work for me either. SMS is the only thing that still works for everyone.)
