@pzmyers I spent vast portions of my youth moving back and forth between major west coast cities and tiny rural towns in Texas; it was like time travelling into the past every time. Racism, bigotry, poor education.
What always stuck with me is the mythical idea of small town living; these are not kind people used to taking life easy and full of humility.. these are 'people of the land' you know.. 'morons' who don't trust you if you're slightly different, beat their spouses and children, consume rampant amounts of alcohol, and peer pressure their children into short pointless marriages and early parenthood.
