There was a strong argument from some Node-ish corners that error-first callbacks were all you'd ever need. As they predicted (and I feared), TC39 has absolutely shit the bed on cancellation (we had to throw it overboard to get Promises to move in 2013), leaving important problems on the field. But we always had a backup: the DOM.
