Established on May 5, 1905, by Robert S. Abbott with 25¢, Chicago Defender was the foremost Black newspaper of its day. Boldly proclaiming itself "The World's Greatest Weekly," it had a profound impact nationwide. 2/3 of its readers lived beyond Chicago. Abbott ingeniously expanded by enlisting Pullman porters, who established a distribution across America, especially the hostile South—a catalyst for the Great Migration.
