my Dad enlisted in the US Army in February of 1942, landed on the 3rd day at Normandy, was demobilized in 1946, and was involuntarily recalled to active duty in 1949. he was assigned to Germany, and I was born in Ohio as my family was en route.
the founding of the NATO alliance changed the trajectory of my family’s life, and saved Europe from the old pattern of endless war & revenge. today we are witnessing the destruction of NATO by an American President, a possibility I would have scoffed at.
