It looks like BlueSky blog authors were compelled to make the difference from Mastodon to look more drastic than it actually is:

They made it seem like on Mastodon you're locked inside your server and accessing global content is somehow more difficult, which isn't true.
The actual difference, AFAIU, is that BlueSky offers curated global feeds, where Mastodon is purely follow-driven. (I know "global timeline" technically exists, but it's useless.)
