Using shortwave signals, the antennas become bigger but these signals will be bent (refracted) by the ionosphere layers and then return to earth. This can happen several times. There is loss with each bounce (like a dirty mirror) but enough signal for very comfortable chatting to the other side of the planet *sometimes:* it's greatly affected by the sun.
