What a beauty! This is comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) passing through the field of view of the LASCO C3 coronagraph.
It wasn't for certain whether it would survive it's closest approach to the sun on January 13th, but it did and delivered us a spectacular show!

The comet appears on the top right edge of the frame, followed by its long and very textured tail with many bands or striations The tail is pointing to the top right and is slightly curved to the right. The comet moves to the left edge of the image, forming an arc around the sun. (remote)
