We're going for complex solutions because we believe we have complex problems. Often the complexity doesn't coming inherently with the tasks but we create it. The reasons are manifold but often it's lack of understanding of the basics. The quality of projects I worked with as an external consultant would've been so much higher, resulting in better a11y and UX for our users (because that's what matters!), if devs (and designers!) would've been good at HTML, CSS, and vanilla JS.
