Humanities departments at sub-elite universities are treated as sprinkles to begin with. None of the powerful careers our students pursue means anything. None of the research we publish means anything. We're not the cake. We're there to make the cake look real, appealing, scrumptious. So no wonder that we also are often the only departments that hire marginalized faculty, whose resistance to being decorative, in a department that is comfortable being merely decorative, finds no traction.
