With the exception of the Interdependency series, every single series I've written started as a standalone novel. I think the difference here is that I always assume my novels are going to be standalones until/unless my publisher comes in and tells me they want more of them. If they don't, cool, I have other ideas. If they do, cool, there's always more about the world that I imagine than I can put into a single book.
