Putin's rhetoric is also telling. He isn't joking, isn't promising to "snuff" anyone "in the toilet", like during the Chechen war. He's… appealing to patriotic feelings and trying to rally the nation around himself. The nation that, as he should know, largely hates him, despite all brainwashing. It means he's out of options and is probably very afraid. He never cowers and begs, normally.
