The US military does not follow US law. It has it's own law code and it's own courts, procedures, and police to enforce and administer justice within the various military branches. This military justice is defined and presided over by the Judge Advocate General and his subordinate Judge Advocates.
The very first thing that Hegseth did upon becoming the Secretary of Defense was to fire all of the Judge Advocates.
It should have been clear from the beginning that Hegseth intended to break the law.
