I think "information workers" that don't generally have good measures of their "productivity" are susceptible to making judgements on whether something improves their productivity* on vibes alone. If it's one or more of new, novel, cool looking, fun, or everybody is doing it will be enough to persuade them that something must be improving their productivity.
* Putting aside for the moment the unhealthy nature of a culture that prizes productivity above all else.
