Sometimes you re-read #Pratchett's #Discworld, and an occasional phrase hits you enough to quote it.
"Maybe, she thought, that was a normal family state in any case. When push came to shove [..] they'd just rely on each other automatically, without a thought."
Sounds to me like as good a definition for a family as you can give.
