Today a Purple Finch (female), a common winter visitor in our area. These can be difficult to see and to ID. My mantra is start with the bill, look for the eye-patch and eyebrow plus mottling. As always Merlin App is a great help.

A fairly stout brown bird with a short strong (finch) bill for seeds. It has a nice eyebrow and an eye patch. The chest and underpants are mottled brown and light tan. The wings appear darker brown but with some mottling. This is a female Purple Finch. I rarely see, or more likely recognize the males. There are two subspecies, so this is likely the eastern.
