A significant reason why much of this early Black history remains unknown in New York City is due to the overshadowing effect of 20th-century history, particularly the Harlem Renaissance, which witnessed a remarkable flourishing of Black life. Consequently, the history of the 19th century, including the New York City Draft Riots, has been somewhat obscured.
