In other situations ... well, theoretically yes, but in practice it's not always smooth. Erin Kissane's Notes from a Mastodon Migration is a great read.
And of course you can't migrate your posts to another Mastodon server at all, whcih is what people really want. When people not familiar with the fediverse ask me why that is, I point out that the Mastodon code base is controlled by the same people who control the largest server, which is generally regarded as having bad moderation, so it's not in their interest to make it easy for people to move -- hmm, I wonder if that accounts for the lack of investment in this?@dragonfrog@mastodon.sdf.org @blogdiva@mastodon.social @KraftTea@mastodon.social @midgephoto@photog.social
