Just like we wouldn't say Hitler targeted immigrants when we mean Jewish people, we should not use the word immigrant when we mean #Latinos, in relation to #ICE and the US government.
Doing so lends credibility to the narrative that this is an immigration issue. When in fact, it's a targeting of an identity, not a status.
But that's exactly what we're doing in our discourse and news coverage.
I call this "the nondescript oppressed identity problem."
